Three of the Guildford Four; Carole Richardson, Paddy Armstrong, and Gerry Conlon were released after serving fifteen years of the life sentences they received from Justice Lord John Donaldson. The Guildford Fourth, Paul Conlon was released on bail pending the appeal against his conviction for separate, unconnected to the Guildford Pub Bombing, murder. This conviction did not fall within the reach of the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Lane. In 1994, the Court of Appeal in Belfast quashed Hill’s conviction for the murder of a British soldier, Brian Shaw.
